It's Okay to be an Outfit Repeater

In college (or in any stage of life, really) it can be difficult to keep up with the fashion trends that come and go, especially because constantly buying new items can be a pain to your pockets. This can lead to a lot of “outfit repeating,” which is, as the name suggests, simply wearing the same outfit more than once.

In The Lizzie McGuire movie (2003), Lizzie’s arch nemesis Kate Sanders exclaims to the entire 8th-grade graduating class that “Lizzie McGuire [is] an outfit repeater.” Embarrassed, Lizzie begins to talk about how shameful she feels having been called out by Kate. This very iconic moment in Disney Channel Original Movie history perpetuates this idea of re-wearing the same outfit to be an awful act, especially when you get caught.

So why is “outfit repeating” such a bad thing?

The short answer is: it’s not! In fact, it’s totally okay to be an outfit repeater.

The idea of “outfit repeating,” in itself, is a classist sentiment that glorifies the idea of spending tons of money on clothes so that one is never caught partaking in such an “embarrassing” or “deplorable” act. But if you're like me, and you're also a broke college student, you won't be able to do away with every outfit after you've worn it (and that's okay)!

The reason I like having versatile pieces is so that I can style them in different ways and avoid outfit repeating, but there's no shame in re-wearing a look that makes you feel good, especially if it means saving money in the long run.

On top of emptying wallets, the concept of “outfit repeating” is what keeps a lot of fast fashion businesses alive. For this reason, repeating an outfit isn’t inherently a bad thing, because it is encouraging a more sustainable fashion industry.

Overall, the key to rocking any outfit is wearing it with confidence, no matter if it’s the first or the hundredth time. So if you have a dress that you just love to wear or a favorite outfit that makes you look good, go ahead and wear it as many times as you want!

And whatever you do, don’t be a Kate Sanders.
