Do you ever get tired of rotating the same 6 shirts and 4 bottoms? Are you looking to change up your style, but don’t know where to begin? Or maybe you’re a college student who is trying to figure out what items to keep or toss before moving?
Hello again, readers! It’s Dav and in today’s blog post, I’ll be sharing all the items I believe make up the perfect wardrobe.
Now the key to *the (*my) perfect wardrobe is having versatile, timeless pieces. You want pieces you can mix-and-match, style year-round, and wear for a multitude of different occasions.
***Disclaimer: this is a list of what I believe to be the “perfect wardrobe.” Everyone’s style is different. Therefore, different items may be more or less desired than the ones on this list. This is simply a basic guide to generate ideas for certain clothing items needed in order to be both stylish and practical, without breaking the bank from buying new trendy items every year. If you’re looking for more options on how to curate the perfect wardrobe, YouTube is always a good resource. Here, is a video by YouTuber itsyuyan that you can check out (after reading, of course)!
With that being said, let’s get into the first item that is a must-have for your closet:
1. A White Tank Top
Starting off with a simple item, white tank tops are essential to building your perfect wardrobe. Whether you choose to go for a racerback style or cami-style top, this item should always be sitting in your closet. The reason this is an essential item to have is because it can be worn with most anything. In the past, I’ve styled white tank tops with mom jeans, skirts, and sweatpants. This piece is also great for layering under a jacket or cardigan. All in all, white tank tops will be your best friend when you’re in a time-crunch and not sure what to wear. Stay tuned for my future post about the 10 ways I style my favorite white tank top.
2. A Plain Black T-Shirt
You need a plain black t-shirt in your closet for the exact same reason you need a white tank top. The item is just versatile. It can be worn with a blazer, to complete a business casual office look. It can also be paired with shorts if you’re looking for a quick but cute look.
3. A Statement Top
Next up is the statement top. This item may be a little vague because a statement top can be anything *you* believe makes a statement. For example, a cheetah-print top can be a statement. Or maybe you’re not into wearing bold prints. A statement top could also be one with long bell-sleeves or an open-back. Whatever you like, but wouldn’t wear on a daily basis (or you’d want to wear to stand out) would classify as a statement top! I usually reach for a statement top when I go out. These are just great to have in your wardrobe when you want to dress up or add a little flare to your outfit.
4. A Good Pair of Jeans
Having a good pair of jeans is so important to anyone’s wardrobe! Everyone should have a solid pair of blue jeans. This means no rips or distressing. Even though ripped jeans can be fun, and I absolutely love wearing them, solid jeans are great to have year-round and work for most-any occasion. Personally, my favorite places to get jeans are Hollister, American Eagle, and PacSun. Whether you reach for skinny jeans or a baggier, mom-jean style, this item is just a staple that you absolutely cannot go without!
5. Lounge Pants
I classify lounge pants as two items: sweatpants and/or leggings. These are two comfy items that can be worn outside and dressed up in a way that still looks presentable. Sweatpants are nice because they’re less restricting. They provide warmth and comfort, while also being an item that can be dressed up or down. Leggings, a piece that made its way into the fashion scene through the athleisure style, can also be styled in a way that looks presentable. However, both items should be in your closet for those days when jeans just aren’t your friend.
6. A Comfy Hoodie
A comfy hoodie should be in your wardrobe for the same reason you should have leggings or sweatpants in your closet. A comfy hoodie is perfect to throw on when you're not sure what to wear. It also is perfect for those days when it starts to rain randomly, which can really put a damper on a good outfit. A plain comfy hoodie can be styled with jeans to maintain style while still being practical and comfortable. Check out these comfy hoodies from Pretty Little Thing and MissGuided.
7. A Reliable Jacket
Depending on where you live, you may not find use in this item. However, a reliable jacket can always be used as a fun layering piece, no matter where you reside. I reach for both denim and faux leather jackets, which are perfect through the Virginia fall and winter. Either item can be catered to your specific style, as well, which is why I love having these pieces in my closet. If you’re going for a more alternative or grunge look, pairing a leather jacket or denim jacket over faded-black jeans would look amazing! If you’re going for a more classic style, you can always throw either jacket over a simple white tee and a fun midi-skirt!
8. Little Black Dress
One Direction’s song of the same name made it clear that Little Black Dresses can be one of the nicest (and hottest) items someone could wear. Having an LBD in your closet is a lot more convenient than you may think. Layered under a knit sweater, a LBD can provide the look of a skirt. By itself, it can be a great piece to wear on a night out or for a special occasion. The amazing thing about Little Black Dresses, too, is that they come in so many different styles. You can opt for a long sleeve LBD or a strapless LBD. If you prefer a fancier look, satin LBDs are everywhere! As a whole, LBDs are just a perfect, simple and easily attainable item to have in your wardrobe.
9. White Sneakers

A classic white sneaker has been my go-to shoe of choice, as of late. Specifically these ones from Steve Madden are so simple and go great with most (if not all) of my outfits. The style of sneaker (in respect to your own style) is also important to keep in mind when buying a pair of white sneakers to fit in with your wardrobe. If you want a more chill look, a pair of white SK8-Hi Vans may be a good fit for you. If you want a shoe that can be paired with any outfit to make it more casual, white Nike Air Forces are totally in, right now! Whichever pair you decide on, you’ll never regret owning a simple, multifaceted item like white sneakers.
10. Black Boots
The last item that is important to any wardrobe is a pair of black boots. As someone who lives in a state that gets relatively cold, I always found it hard to wear a cute outfit from head-to-toe while remaining both warm and stylish. Black boots were my saving grace! You may opt for a pair of simple (faux leather or suede) black booties or even go for a chunkier boot like Doc Martens, depending on your style. No matter what you choose, this item is sure to be a piece that you gravitate towards during any season.
Well, that concludes the items I believe make up a perfect wardrobe. Again, this is just a starting point to get you to begin building your personally-crafted closet and all items on the list can be adapted to fit your personal style.
As always, thank you so much for reading, everyone! See you next week with a new blog post.
